Since 2019, Howell Conservation Fund has been helping to bridge the gap between the for-profit, philanthropic, and environmental sectors across a range of focus areas. Below are the areas that we have helped influence so far:
Advancing circular economy solutions to end plastic pollution. We do this by fostering global collaborations, advancing science, and catalyzing circular economy solutions for plastics.
Protecting bird species that are sentinels of environmental quality, helping to curb the loss of ~3 billion birds in North America in the last 50 years. We do this by supporting market-based programs that solve the root causes of the issue.
Revitalizing vital marine ecosystems. We do this by bringing together stakeholders to figure out the underlying causes of environmental problems and then pilot new approaches.

The majority of funding goes to support our project and program specific activities like education.
These unrestricted funds are used for catalytic grants to drive breakthrough solutions in the conservation sector.
Well below average in the non-profit sector, this financing helps keep our lights on and pays for items like organizational insurance. The overhead rate only applies to project specific grants and does not apply to general donations from the public.
*The 10% overhead rate is our target in non-COVID years. Due to the global impacts of the pandemic in 2020 – 2021 and the start-up nature of the organization, e.g. limited ability to travel for conservation projects and internal initiatives such as our website launch, the actual overhead percentage for 2020 and 2021 is higher than our target rate.
